3 Cheap Ways To Stop Mosquitoes From Entering Your House Through Open Windows

Opening a window is a great way to air out a room and adjust the indoor temperature while conserving energy. Unfortunately, opening a window is also a great way to attract nearby mosquitoes. Aside from being flying nuisances that feed on human and animal blood, mosquitoes also spread harmful diseases, including the dangerous Zika virus. But that doesn't mean you have to let mosquitoes stop you from enjoying the benefits of opening windows in your house. Here are three cheap ways to keep mosquitoes out of your house while your windows are open.

1. Keep Mosquitoes Out With Fans

Though they happen to carry and spread many deadly diseases, mosquitoes are not the most physically gifted flying insects. Due to their tiny size, they have difficulty flying against strong winds. You can use this fact to your advantage when your windows are open. When you open a window, put a fan in front of it, and turn the fan on medium to high speed. Be sure the airflow covers the entire opening of the window, and watch as the mosquitoes are — quite literally — blown away as they try to enter your home.

2. Repel Mosquitoes With Lavender

Though fans are an effective way of preventing mosquitoes from entering your home through open windows, fans also cause a noticeable amount of noise. If you want your house to stay quiet, or if you plan on opening several windows in your home at the same time, fans are not likely the ideal solution. Fortunately, there are other ways to keep mosquitoes out. For instance, lavender is an excellent mosquito repellent.

Place lavender-scented candles in front of your windows to keep mosquitoes away. Alternatively, rub lavender oil around the window. Mosquitoes strongly dislike the odor and will avoid entering your home when it smells like lavender.

3. Drink Less Beer (Seriously)

According to a surprising study, mosquitoes love to party. The study found that mosquitoes were more attracted to people who had consumed beer than people who were sober, which means that drinking less will decrease the likelihood of mosquitoes entering your house (and save you money, too).

Keep alcohol — and anyone drinking it — away from open windows; otherwise, the mosquitoes will gladly join in and probably won't want to leave your house anytime soon.

If you have a large number of mosquitoes flying around your home, call an affordable pest control company, like BUG Busters-Do IT Yourself Pest Control, to put an end to your mosquito troubles.
