4 Ways to Prevent Bed Bugs in Your Apartment

If you live in an area where bed bugs are common, there are some steps you can take to make sure that your apartment doesn't get infested with bed bugs.

#1 Get Rid of the Clutter

Bed bugs love clutter. The more clutter that is in your apartment, the more places bed bugs have to hide. Keep your home clean. Do not leave clothing on the floor or junk piled up. Keep a protective plastic cover over your mattresses. Keep your couch cushions nice and clean. A clean home has a lot fewer places for bed bugs to hide, making your home less of a target.

Keep all clothing and other fabrics off your floor, including any blankets you keep out on your couches. Bed bugs like to hide in warm, soft places and often travel on the floor, so keeping your clothing off the floor gives potential bed bugs fewer spaces to hide.

#2 Keep Your Bedding Clean

Bed bugs love dirty places, including dirty bed sheets. You should wash your bedding at least once a week. That includes your sheet, blankets, and even your bedspread. When you wash your bedding, use warm water and high heat; this will sanitize your clothing and kill any bed bugs or their eggs that may be present.

Also, keep your mattress wrapped up. If you have had your mattress for a while, you can purchase a plastic cover for it.

#3 Cover Up Power Outlets

When you live in an apartment, bed bugs can travel from one apartment to the next. One way they can travel to different apartments is through power outlets. If you already have bed bugs in your apartment, they may also hide out in power outlets as you clean things up.

You can keep bed bugs out of your power outlets by covering up your power outlets. Just purchase some plastic covers to put over your power sockets. This is a good way to keep bed bugs from traveling and hiding out in your apartment.

#4 Vacuum Frequently

Finally, make sure that you vacuum your apartment frequently. When you vacuum your apartment, make sure that you get under your bed, couches, and tables. When you vacuum, you should also remove your couch cushions and vacuum under your couch cushions and in the crevices as well. Vacuum off your mattress and flip up your mattress and vacuum between your mattress and your box spring. These are all places that bed bugs like to hang out.

If nearby apartments have bed bugs, change out the vacuum bag after each time you clean your house, seal it up, and throw it away outside. This will prevent bed bugs from escaping your vacuum and vacuum bag and getting back into your home. If your apartment has bed bugs, contact a bed bug treatment company for pest control services.
